Beach Walk & Trip to Roger's

FRIDAY PM: Since mosquitos are getting really bad in the backyard due to the rain, Mom took me to the beach near the pier to run tonight. She calls it "yanking the knot out of my tail" because I start bouncing around the house a bit if I don't get a long run in during the week. Two nice ladies from Amici's restaurant were very loud laughing on the beach (perhaps due to what was in the large cups they were drinking out of) and called me over. They petted me and thought I was a pretty dog. I ran in a lot of circles and played in the waves. Mom bought me some dog biscuits when she did the Friday night grocery shopping. TGIF!

SAT AM:
Went to the beach early AM with Mom and Linda. There were a few dead fish on the beach...I tried to roll on one so that I would smell good - but Mom started yelling at me. I ran and ran - zooming up and down the beach - for an hour and a half as they walked. I met a small labradoodle, standard poodle and played in the water some with a yellow lab and funny-looking golden retriever who had been shaved in a silly, modern cut - almost like a mohawk on his back. I chased some pigeons but didn't catch any.

After we hit the beach, Mom usually takes me to visit Roger who trims my nails, but they said not to bring me backin all sandy and wet, so we headed straight home after our walk. I supervised Mom mowing the front lawn. Then, she hosed me down - using the garden hose - what was she thinking? Then...she drove me to see Roger who trimmed my nails. I try to distract him by licking his face - he laughed and said his glasses were fogging up. (I noticed that he is now charging Mom more for nail trims because I sometimes make it a bit difficult.)

Mom says I have to have my nails trimmed more often as I have a dog show coming up in a few weeks!

Weekend Update

This past Monday, Chris and Nicole came to visit my family in St. Augustine. They were very nice people and we had a lot of fun! Chris liked taking photos of me! (Note: I am not normally allowed up on the dining room chair, it was just for the photo!)

Memorial Day Weekend - Saturday

A.M. Started the weekend off with an early a.m. walk with my mom. She let me run for a bit on a vacant parcel and I stirred up a small flock of doves.

MID-DAY Napped late morning and early afternoon with dad who was having a resting day and watching "Deadliest Crab" fishing show marathon.

P.M. Played and wrestled for a while in the front yard with my friend, "JAKE," a Great Dane/Boxer mix from two doors down.

IN UPFRONT FAMILY NEWS - "Chad" Brumbaugh (Intl Ch Penlee UpFront Arcturus MH) and my Aunt "Lulu" (full sister of mom "Haley - Ch. Valley Hunter's What the Haley MH) just delivered 7 healthy pups! MORE TO COME...

JUNE LITTER PENDING...Mom "Haley" is currently carrying a litter sired by Dual CH ValleyHunter Southern Comfort MH, CGC “Shooter”. Very "birdy" puppies are expected from this pair of hard-hunting Vizslas.

Vizslas at the Beach

My younger half-brother Micah (Upfront Good As Gold) had a great time running on the beach during his recent visit to St. Augustine. It was his first encounter with the ocean, but I showed him the ropes!

Upfront Vizsla Fun Weekend April 4-5 2009

This is the first blog posting to document the life and fun of Polly the Vizsla (a.k.a. Upfront PA Polaris).

I have been owned by my current parents for just over a year. I was raised by a wonderful pair of Vizsla owners/breeders, Marie and Dave Brumbaugh of Upfront Vizslas (http://brumbaughs.net/UpFront/), in Gainesville, Florida, during my first year.

For those unfamiliar with the Vizsla breed, it also known as the Hungarian Pointer. It is a breed suitable only for owners who understand the responsibilities associated with owning a very smart, high-energy dog and who can appreciate the fact that we Vizslas are extraordinary, but "clingy" dogs which require a great deal of our owners' time and affection.

The Brumbaughs and other reputable Vizsla breeders field trial their dogs, due to the importance of retaining this breed's pointing and retrieving skills and the overall versatility/utility as a sporting breed. Vizslas also excel at obedience, agility, and rally events. The Vizsla is the only breed in the American Kennel Club (AKC) registry to have ever attained a Quintuple Championship (QT) title.

This past weekend, I was entered in the Greater Orange Park Dog Club's show at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds in Elkton, Florida. 126 breeds and 800 dogs participated in the show. I am the first "show dog" my owners have owned and while they arrived at this unintentionally, they are having a lot of fun learning about dog shows. My mom enjoys seeing all of the different breeds of dogs at the shows.

On Saturday, I won a red 2nd Place in my Open Bitches class, but it was a happy loss! My full sister Tara (Goldstar Annian's Antares) won 1st Place in the class, along with Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex awards, earning additional points toward her own championship title. Tara's mom Patty Hart (www.vizslak.com) is a great sport and takes all of her Vizslas (Nero, Rocket & Tara) to field trials and conformation/rally events. Rocket (Annian's Rocket's Red Flair) is my daddy and has earned Senior Hunter (SH), Companion Dog (CD) and Rally Excellent (RAE) titles.

At the show, my half-brother Ember (Ch. Upfront N Lyons Goblin of Fire JH) was selected by Judge Keke Kahn as Winners Dog and Best of Winners earning his final points for his championship title. Congratulations to Ember and owner Jennifer Anderson!!

(Note: Ember is the third puppy of my Vizsla-mom "Haley"(Valleyhunter What the Haley) to earn his CH title in the past few months, joining my full brother Jagger (CH Annian’s Rockin' The Fields Jagger JH) and my half-sister Olivia (CH Upfront's Livin Large at ValleyHunter) in this achievement.)

On Saturday, half-brother Micah (Upfront Good As Gold) won Bred-By Exhibitor Dogs and Reserve placements. Half-brother Luka (Upfront Luka Me Now) was also shown on Saturday by his owner/handler Bev McDonald with proud papa John cheering them both on.

On Saturday afternoon, mom and Marie took Micah and me for a fun run on St. Augustine beach. It was Micah first trip to see the ocean. We enjoyed jumping into and over the waves, prompting one human beachgoer to comment that we "looked like dolphins."

On Sunday morning, we all went to the beach again for a sunrise run. (Photos to come...)

At Sunday's show, I received a1st Place in Open Bitches class, as well as Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex, under Judge Elaine Mathis and earned another point toward a CH title. Luka won a blue ribbon in the 12-18th Month Dogs class. Micah won his Bred-By Exhibitor Dogs class and Winners Dog, and a point toward his title. (Special thanks to fellow Vizsla owner Catherine Brooks for handling Micah in the BOB class on Sunday!)

It was a fun and successful weekend for the Upfront Vizsla family!
